What we collect

Nothing personally identifying. Earthquakes on the Map is a static website. It sets no advertising cookies and runs no cross-site trackers. The earthquake data and the map code are all served from this site’s own domain.

We use Umami, a privacy-friendly, self-hosted analytics tool, served from our own umami.earthquakesonmap.com subdomain. Umami does not use cookies, does not store your IP address, and cannot track you across other websites. It records only aggregate figures: which pages are viewed, the referring site, and a coarse country, browser and device type. There is no consent banner because there is nothing that requires consent.

Like any website, the hosting provider’s servers also keep basic technical logs of requests (IP address, timestamp, page requested, browser type) for a short period, to operate the service and protect it from abuse. These logs are not used to build a profile of you and are not shared.

Cookies and local storage

The site sets no cookies. If optional Google Analytics is enabled in future, it will load only after you click “Accept” on a consent banner, and your choice will be remembered in your browser’s local storage under a single key. You can review or change that choice at any time using the “Cookie settings” link in the footer.

The interactive map may store small preferences (such as your last-used filter) in your browser’s local storage. This never leaves your device.

The URL bar

When you move the year slider or change a filter, the map updates the address in your browser (for example ?year=1964) so you can bookmark or share a particular view. This happens entirely in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.
